Looks like a real score.
For the first time in my life I’m taking a little break from buying - until next month. But nothing since New Years. Of course, I have unopened buys from months, if not years, ago. Gotta have just the right moment for some things. And I have a cart or two waiting at some of the finer online establishments.
Another brilliant record from Athens of the North, this time an obscure 1970 Gospel Funk song.
There’s also a great short documentary about it on YouTube
Bit of doof doof
This guy. Saw him at The Electric in Brixton back end of last year and if there was any justice in the world he’d be an absolute superstar. Massive Prince comparisons but when was that a bad thing
Needs to work on his songwriting, I feel.
After my little New Orleans binge for Mardi Gras, I lost my mind, broke my buying fast, and bought this:
Like I really need anymore New Orleans, let alone a 3CD set in a freaking tin! There must be something wrong with me.
Picked this up today on the basis that I’ve liked some of his more cosmic-sounding cuts, and this literally has the word ‘cosmic’ in the title… I also could have sworn that it was supposed to have a Loft Classic, or a Baldelli or Harvey spin on it, but maybe I got that wrong? There’s certainly a couple of tracks with a nice space-y vibe which might be good to include in a mix, but on first listen there’s nothing obviously dancefloor-friendly. Maybe it’s the source of a sample or something?
I was all lined up to share Payfone’s latest - hot n sleazy
Had this neat album from Pleasure Pool released on Optimo Music on repeat - no standard out tracks but all quality IMHO
Bought the Asro CD by Kala Jula, Fama Diabaté & Gangbe Brass Band.
Live version of one song:
Based on review here:
Always a bit daft to buy from a review. I just never learn. But Gangbe Brass Band always worth a shot.
Haven’t heard the whole thing, ‘cos the post, you know.
Plus also for some other daft reason, the latest Skatalites compilation, Essential Artist Collection.
Hopefully, this merely complements the previous Skatalites comp Occupation Ska! The Very Best Of already in my possession.
But no harm in having two copies of some songs, right? DJs know.
Must be in a horns mood.
Looked like the tracks had fairy tale titles until my inhouse (N2) Japanese speaker put me right.
