Tommy McLain - Before I Grow Too Old

Mpharanyana and The Cannibals - Thakane

and, I think,

Wreckless Eric - Go The Whole Wide World

The original

The Tommy McLain version is generally considered the classic.

Fwiw, all DJs should approve of the lyrics, especially the first line:

I’m gonna go out dancing every night
I’m gonna see all the city lights
I’m gonna do everything with silver and gold
I’ve got to hurry up before I grow too old

There are two more verses of not quite so awesome relevance.

Pretty sure Joe Strummer covered this.

Was released after his death, which gave extra poignancy.

Great! I knew there was another version somewhere but the brain cells weren’t firing. I was off on a Bim Sherman/Prince Far I/On’U Sound type search, which wasn’t getting me anywhere although there is a Far I Silver & Gold track.

You got me obsessing about Joe Strummer . . . again. Been listening to the Joe Strummer 001 comp and it’s mighty fine. I don’t have much in the way of heroes, but I have a great deal of appreciation and admiration for old Joe.

Funny thing, once I was introduced to Mick Jones at the Club 181 in San Francisco about four decades ago. It was “This is Mick from The Clash.” I got somewhat flustered by the proximity of famous person and sputtered out, “Mick, Mick Strummer, right!” So, I found out what the back of Mick Jones’ head looked like. Damn fine hair.
