Hello, looking to get my folks a Portuguese record for their Christmas and looking for tips. They’re into all sorts but somewhere between Average White Band and Sam Cooke, sing along but not too jazz. Any ideas? Cheers
this album came out some time ago, but its got a lot of good stuff on it. Not solely Portugal, it includes the portuguese diaspora.
The portuguese dont actually listen to a ton of music in portuguese.
A lot of the best stuff is Brazilian.
Great cheers, Aye, I’ve got a few Brazilian ones but they’ve been learning Portuguese and like a sing along so trying to get them something that’ll be closer to the dialect they’re attempting.
I reckon I’ll get them this though. thanks
Are you looking for something specifically from Portugal, or in Portuguese which would include Brazil?
If including Brazil, let me recommend anything by Wilson Simonal, as he was “our” Sam Cooke, or the closest thing to it - and as a bonus, his pronunciation is flawless which will let them feel good as they practice. As a plus he was pretty popular in Portugal.
Stevie Wonder even did his version of “Sa Marina”
My favorite Brazilian musicians are kinda obscure, like all my favorites, but you cant go wrong with:
Tuca- Dracula I Love You- she lived and worked in France as well as Brazil, and her music doesnt sound like anyone else, but its great.
and basically anything by Itamar Assumpção. He was somewhere between prince, george clinton, and Jobim, and always had great bands. I have something like 5 of his albums and they are all great.
Didn’t know any of these, thanks. Brazilian will be braw. Kids will like the idea of an album called ‘Dracula I love you’ too. Something for all the family
Scrap that, it’s a wee bit pricey, even on reissue.
If you want something newer and with more pep then I recommend Garotas Suecas who are good friends and my favorite band in Brazil. Their first album can be found pretty easily, still, and not expensive…
Check Arthur Verocai, can’t recommend him enough
