I’ll NEVER tire of watching this video, both for the skill and the reactions. I still punch the air at the appropriate point.
I got my start djing by doing a lot of B Boy stuff so I’d be interested to see what is in that list of songs they have to pick from, especially if it is as they quoted in the article “Some of them the breakers will have heard before, some are more rare.”
this bit tho… “Seventies-era classics such as James Brown’s [Get Up, Get Into It, Get Involved] are still part of the standard repertoire, though Guilloteau insists the art of DJing for competitive breaking must also entail challenging athletes with curveballs, such as 1970s English prog-rock band Babe Ruth’s [The Mexican] or Nina Simone’s jazzy [Funkier Than a Mosquito’s Tweeter”
All pretty well known b boy classics in the scene really.
I recently played at a Red Bull dance competition where breaking was actually not allowed, and simply to see what would happen, I played “Give It Up Turn It Loose” You could physically see the dancer twitch cos he wanted to instantly break. The MC immediately said “You gotta resist guys!”
Amusing, but I probably shouldn’t have done it.
Melo-D and J-Rocc Are my absolute favorite for getting busy behind the decks. Selection and smooth transitions are always amazing
