‘I’m Thinking of Ending Things’ on Netflix is bonkers and brilliant with Jesse Plemons, Jessie Buckley, David Thewlis and Toni Collette…
Did media studies at the local tech college in a crap new town. A far cry from film school but we were all very keen and started our own after-hours film club we’d watch what we brought in a group. Most of it was the usual good but cliched stuff e.g. Scorsese, Alien, pirate copies of Reservoir Dogs, when one of the tutors caught on to our enthusiasm and suggested we broaden our horizons with a few selections of his own. First film he suggested was The Parallax View which was quite the revelation and turning point in our young sponge like minds.
I absolutely loved moviedrome. Just in case anyone else is wondering:
I’m with others - always prefer a movie over a long, sometimes drawn out TV series which runs over several seasons. Give me a compact story told in 2 hours every time!
A few great films I always love to go back to:
- Blow Out. 1980, Brian De Palma film with John Travolta. One of the best things De Palma made, superb thriller.
- To Live And Die In LA. 1985. William Friedkin film with William Peterson and Willem Defoe. Cracking thriller, notable for the Wang Chung soundtrack and some great car chases.
- Heat. 1994. Michael Mann thriller with De Niro and Pacino. Recently got released on 4K, just gets better with age. So good!
- Three Days Of The Condor. 1975. Sydney Pollack spy thriller with Robert Redford, the gorgeous Faye Dunaway and a brilliant Max Von Sydow. You also get a great Dave Grusin score thrown in for free!
I could go on, but just a few.
Oh, and despite me saying I prefer films, ‘Tokyo Vice’ on BBC is a great watch!
Loads of essential viewing there. Demon Seed, Barbarella and Weekend I’ll always associate with shaking off a heavy weekend. 200 Motels too, though had to turn that off for being just too much.
It’s not a movie, but I’m compelled to recommend the early 90s series Phoenix. Series 1 is loosely based on the same crims as Animal Kingdom. Episode 1
Only one trip the the cinema in recent times, for The Banshees of Inisherin. Beautiful but bleak, and missold as a dark comedy - more a dark film with a few moments of comedy. No denying its brilliance though.
As for at home, I really enjoyed Good Nurse on Netflix. Based on a true story of a nurse in the States who went a bit Shipman.
Melies’ Trip to the moon (in colour) with Air soundtrack. Def. not new but new to me!
Thanks for the recommendation Hans
Banshees of Inisherin is amazing…. Just watched half of ‘Troll’ on Netflix… formulaic… like a Norwegian Jurassic Park with 1.37% of the budget
Happened to watch this three yers ago, loved it; if you get a chance to watch it, just listen to the end titles (too)
Loved, The Square, especially that dinner event scene in the middle. My favourite film that year. Still love it now.
Looking forward to seeing his new one the Sad Triangle, that’s just come out although not supposed to be quite as good.
Plus one for me. Charlie Kaufman on top form!
Amsterdam, on Disney+
I really enjoyed it. Christian Bale, Margot Robbie, De Niro, Remi Malek amongst a host of others.
Chuck and Buck also by Mike White is worth a watch too
Thanks Jolyon, that’s added to my new year watchlist.
Went to an actual cinema last week to see an actual grown-up movie for the first time in Christ knows how long. The Menu. What a bloody fantastic film it is, too. They’re calling it a horror comedy, but it’s really just a black comedy. Fucking hilarious and so well scripted and acted. Ralph Fiennes is amazing in it. Apparently, it’s the team behind Succession, but I’m completely out of touch with who’s who these days. Go see this if you can, it’s a long time since I came out of a cinema screening buzzing with pleasure.
Really want to see that in the cinema, but its been on a super-limited release round my way. Hopefully that will change post-Xmas. And yes, its directed by the fantastic Mark Mylod and co-written by Will Tracy, both of whom worked on Succession.
