Interesting music from Eastern Europe before the wall fell

I love this Ewa Bem track, but sadly it never got a vinyl release.

Sorry to be a pedant (or pednat for Bill), but NOVI Singers were Polish, not Yugoslavian.

More Polish stuff…

A personal Polish favourite,

Classic cheapie on 7"

Another cheap as chips 7"

Pretty obvious stuff, but a great track.

This was a big hit when it was released. It has a slightly corny vibe I really like. Sadly the singer was shot dead in 1991 by his lover’s husband.

Thanks for the correction! :+1:

Now, having looked at their Discogs entry I also see that ‘Novi’ is an acronym for ‘New Original Vocal Instruments’.

Well, I found it interesting!:upside_down_face:

Calling themselves NOVI is interesting as there is no V in the Polish alphabet, so I suppose they were trying to show the western influence? In Polish it would be NOWI, but that’s a rather mute point given it’s an acronym.

Yes, also the word ‘Singers’ in English rather than Polish. Clearly intended as a nod towards Western modernity.

Edit: And I suspect that the letters of a Polish translation of ‘New Original Vocal Instruments’ would be in a different order.

It would be NOIW Piosenkarze (I think). NOVI Singers trips off the tongue a bit better!

That’s the end of my pedantry. I’ll try and post some more music up.

One of my regular listeners is from Poland and quite knowledgeable on Polish music (jazz, orchestral/film, funk and rock for sure) if anyone had specific questions.

Here’s a nice heavy bit of funky Ost-rock, recorded in the former DDR in 1972. Has a couple of interesting breaks, too.

And a bit of East German Philly-inspired disco. Sounds better on vinyl, though the production does sound a bit thin overall.

Don’t know if Michal Urbaniak is considered obvious or not since the Beasties sampled him at least a couple times. I was in Paul’s Boutique in Krakow recently but they only had one or two of his albums.

This track by Hungarian AE Bizottsag was on a B-Music comp and I’ve played it out a couple times

This made me think about the eastern European hip-hop scene.

I’m pretty sure that there was a reasonably large rap/hip-hop scene in East Berlin in the late 80’s.

Does anyone here have any knowledge of it?

Sounding like the Yugoslavian Police
