Can we talk about how good the Matthew Burgess Mystery Mix is?

Thank you Matt! That one was put together on train journeys oddly enough - about nine months of them…

I hope you got a window seat :slightly_smiling_face:

As if! Pablo is obviously mad! Or your wife in disguise?

Spot on about the Lowlife link, hand in glove…I used to love the chat on here the days after a party with hazy recollections and track IDs…Looking forward to more of that!

Matt! Good to see you here again.

I wish I had time to do another one. Back when I did the Emotional Pop one and then our As One wedding mix I was much more immersed in music and had more awareness of the sounds and tracks and movements of musical cultures at that time. Mixes need an element of freshness and surprise for me. Searching for where that surprise comes from takes a lot of time when so much music is so widely available, and harmonic mixing tools are commonplace.
Never say never though :slightly_smiling_face:

Hi Matthew. Likewise! Feels less crazed and frenetic than the first incarnation of DJH when identifying and buying records seemed pivotal to my relevance as a human being! Enjoying this more leisurely version. Or that might all just be me projecting…

Anyway, I know exactly what you mean about that element of surprise. When I’m making a mix it has to inspire me or I won’t bother anyone else with it. Some personal magic needs to be distilled into it. I am not currently being channeled by the Divine for its mixtape output.

PS I’m listening to a lot of Pet Shop Boys lately and often think of you are their other ‘biggest fan’. But not in a creepy way.

Can we put this in a gold frame and sell it in the shop?

At the risk of sounding totally incompetent, how do I listen to this mix? I didn’t see a link in the thread. Am I missing it?:grimacing:

Or download here:

There it is! Thanks for taking care of me @Vlad

I’ve battered that site since the old site went down…who hosts it? Is it Bill and Frank?

The internet says “REDACTED FOR PRIVACY”.

Which makes it a mystery by name as well!

Is the old Mystery Mix site actually run by you, @GrimsbyRiviera ?

No it’s not, but I can’t remember who did it now. They asked us for permission, though

Finally got around to listening to this mix, and it’s a great wee snapshot of the time, but without glaringly obvious songs. I can totally see why this mix would garner such favourable and long lasting memories.

Yes, as @jolyon says, I knocked that up during the DJHistory Mark 1 era. If I remember correctly, a lot of the old Mystery Mixes were up on the DJH site, but when @GrimsbyRiviera started thinning them out I offered to archive them on a standalone site. I did it as much to teach myself web-building skills as anything else, using software that’s now pre-historic. Mystery Mixes were a monthly event so I added new ones when I had time, but ran out of steam at No. 77 (I do have all the subsequent ones stashed away though). Over the last decade or so I’ve thought of either taking it down (as it does cost money) or creating something a bit more “modern”. As you can see, I’ve done neither…

Well thanks for doing it John, really appreciated. The plan is for us to add all of them onto the new site gradually, but then we’re launching a new mystery mix style series, and we’re angling to get sponsorship from Shazam for it (the concept behind it, is all the tracks on each will be unshazam-able).

My pleasure…and great concept for the new series! :facepunch:
