Burt Bacharach appreciation thread

Keep 'em coming! Good to remember how much his music cut through with African-American musicians and not just white lounge acts.

Here’s a lovely version of Look of Love by African-American jazz harpist Dorothy Ashby set against a backdrop of clattering tribal percussion.

And this… An alternative to the familiar studio version, it’s Dionne singing in a club in Knokke in Belgium (edit: there’s a popcorn link right there!) in 1964. Great delivery, and a nicely restrained backing band. What presence she has!

Two not especially good versions, but different and nostalgic. File Smith & Mighty along with Soul II Soul in those “whatever happened to” discussions.

I just noticed the Sybil version of “Don’t Make Me Over” posted earlier calls itself a UK Soul Mix.

I used to have that Smith & Mighty version of Walk On By…!

And I suspect the Sybil ‘UK Soul mix’ is referencing ‘Street Soul’ which (iirc) was essentially the British hip-hop-inflected version of the Jam & Lewis US soul sound of the time (mid 80s onwards?).

Another version of Look of Love, this time by The Meters… The tone on that guitar really makes this version stand out.

Well, I never knew that Burt was covered by The King! That Reggae cover is pretty nice too.

Here’s a very different version of Walk On By from Rahsaan Roland Kirk. I like the sheer unapologetically upbeat brassiness of it, which gives it a completely different mood compared to the reflective tone of Dionne’s original. I don’t recall the exuberant whoops and laughter featuring in her version either :upside_down_face:

Today is Valentine’s Day of course, so another version of Look of Love seems appropriate. This one is by Platinum Pied Pipers (ah… supposedly ‘the future of hip-hop’, but I wonder what happened to them?). I still have the 12"promo of this from about 2006(?). At the time I loved their clunky futuristic take on hip-hop. They had a Slum Village / J Dilla connection iirc.

Here’s quite a beaty take on Look Of Love by Barbara Acklin. Got played a bit on the Northern scene.

Another tenuous link to Valentine’s Day. A swinging uptempo version of Wives And Lovers by Dieter Reith Trio. Think this made it onto a jazz-dance comp BITD

Always been partial to this one, no idea why, it’s goofy as hell but catchy. Sounds like blooper reel music.

Yes! Kinda reminds me of Yakety Sax if you know that one…!?

I’m amazed this hasn’t been posted yet.

Well, I’m amazed that I haven’t heard this excellent version before now! Thanks for posting, and welcome to the forum. I think I recognise you from VV/VG+. In which case double welcome :+1:

Another version of Look of Love… From a cool EZ guitar album…

That Platinum Pied Pipers’ “Look Of Love” sounds like what would happen if you used a vocoder, a talk box and autotune all at the same time … whilst singing through a trombone.

No “Trains and Boats and Planes” yet? There’s a lot of versions to choose from but I like this one best as she sounds the most haunted by the whole experience:

And posting this because although I’ve known it for decades, I only just found out it is a Bacharach & David song.
